The city has installed a new small outdoor skating rink at Riverside Park, on the softball fields behind Haverhill Stadium. Weather permitting, outdoor skating is offered beginning at 2 p.m. Lights are turned on at 4 p.m., and the rink closes at 8. Skaters must bring their own skates. Hay bales are placed by the rink for spectators. The rink will accommodate approximately 20 skaters at a time. “Haverhill is a beautiful place in the wintertime, with many things for families with children to do,” said Mayor James J. Fiorentini, in a written statement. “Unfortunately, over the past few years, it is not been cold enough or safe enough to skate on our many outdoor lakes and ponds. This is the first time in several years we have been able to provide outdoor skating for our families.” The city also offers sledding at Winnekenni Park. City workers last week were installing a snow fence and hay bales. In the meantime, city officials strongly encourage parents to have their children sled in the area closest to Kenoza Avenue and to watch children carefully.
