City Clerk Timothy Spanos said nomination papers are available in his office for those who would like to run in the special election for the 12th Essex state representative seat formerly held by the late Joyce Spiliotis. The Peabody Democrat died at the age of 65 on Nov. 29 after battling cancer. She had been reelected to her sixth term at the state election last November. Whoever is elected will fill out the remainder of her term, which began Jan. 2. The Massachusetts House recently set April 2 as the date of the special election and March 5 as the date of the primary. The 12th Essex district includes all precincts in wards 1-4 and precincts 1 and 3 in ward 5 in Peabody. Anyone seeking a spot on the ballot must obtain at least 150 certified signatures. Candidates have until Jan. 22 to submit nomination papers to the city clerk’s office for certification, and until Jan. 29 to submit certified papers to the secretary of state’s office. Spanos also said that Feb. 13 is the last day to register to vote in the primary and March 13 is the deadline to register to vote in the special elecion.
