Committee to screen superintendent applications

The School Committee recently named a screening committee to help select a new school superintendent. The 12-member committee, appointed Jan. 8, will review applicants that were referred by the town’s search consultant, New England School Development Council. It will be guided by a profile of the optimal candidate that was developed with input from nine focus groups and an online survey conducted in November and December, and approved by the School Committee, according to School Committee chairman Tom Markham. The screening committee has been asked to provide the School Committee with the names of three to five finalists by Feb. 15. The School Committee has a goal of making an appointment by April 1 to ensure the person selected is able to assume the job by July 1. Joan Landers resigned as Wakefield’s superintendent July 31 last year to become superintendent of the North Middlesex Regional School District. Garry Murphy is serving as Wakefield’s interim school superintendent, and Sandra Halloran as interim assistant superintendent.
