The City Council recently elected District 8 Councilor Dan Cortell to be its president for the coming year. At its first meeting of 2013, the council also tapped at-large member Brian Hatleberg as its vice president and Ward 7 Councilor Clifford Cunningham as its delegate to the School Committee. Cortell, an attorney for the state Division of Insurance’s Board of Appeals, was chosen by the council in early 2010 to fill the District 8 seat after the incumbent councilor resigned prior to the start of the two-year term. Cortell was then elected to the seat by voters in 2011. “I’m incredibly honored to have been selected by my peers,” he said of being tapped as council president. “Their trust in me is humbling and appreciated.” Hatleberg is in his fourth term on the council. He served as president in 2009. Cunningham is in his first term.
