Bank donates to bell tower repairs

Reading Co-operative Bank has donated $1,000 to help repair and preserve the steeple bell tower at the Old South United Methodist in Reading. The bank’s donation comes in response to an appeal by the Reading Steeple and Bell Tower Preservation Fund Committee, a group of citizens who are working to save the structure at the head of Reading town common. In 2011, the American Steeple and Tower Co. of Salem assessed the damage to the nearly 200-year-old tower, its four working clock faces, bell, and cupola. It was determined that the repairs would cost about $130,000. In hopes of raising enough money to restore the landmark to its original beauty, a fund has been established at Reading Co-operative Bank. To contribute to the restoration effort, make checks payable to Reading Steeple and Bell Tower Preservation Fund, 6 Salem St., Reading, MA 01867. Contributions are tax deductible.
