The Registry of Deeds Building in Lawrence, which is owned by the Northern Essex Community College Foundation, is being demolished to make room for green space connecting two of the college’s downtown Lawrence buildings. When completed, the 41,500-square-foot site will provide a walkway between the Dr. Ibrahim El Hefni Allied Health and Technology Center on Common Street, which is scheduled to open in fall 2013, and the Louise Haffner Education Center on Amesbury Street. The college purchased the registry building in 2011 at auction; it had been empty for more than 15 years at the time. The new green space is expected to be completed by July 2013.
