Tufts University has provided 12 Somerville organizations with small grants totaling nearly $6,000 for neighborhood projects, according to an announcement from the university. Awarded through the Tufts Neighborhood Service Fund, the grants, ranging from $400 to $500 each, fund projects including cab vouchers for emergency transportation for low-income residents and translation services and child care at community meetings involving Assembly Square. In all, 32 programs were accepted out of 49 proposals, the announcement said. The program is funded through donations from Tufts employees. “This year’s grant proposals were thoughtful and compelling. We wish we could fund all of them,” Barbara Rubel, director of community relations at Tufts, said in a prepared statement. “We hope the employee contributions to [the program] demonstrate how vital our host communities are to the university.”
