The city has begun a program that allows veterans to save money on their property taxes by doing volunteer work for the city. The plan, similar to an existing program the city offers to seniors, was proposed by Mayor Scott D. Galvin and Larry Guiseppe, the city’s veterans service officer, and unanimously approved recently by the City Council. Cities and towns were granted the option to offer the program through the Valor Act, a bill adopted by lawmakers last May that provides various forms of assistance to veterans. Under the Woburn program, veterans can volunteer up to 125 hours of service in city departments each year in exchange for a reduction in their property taxes. The reduction would be calculated at the state minimum wage of $8 per hour for the service provided, or a maximum of $1,000 per year. Participants must be honorably discharged veterans who reside in Woburn and own and occupy their homes. The city will offer the work assignments on a first-come, first-served basis.
