Speliotis to serve as House committee chairman

State Representative Theodore C. Speliotis has landed a key leadership post in the State House. The Danvers Democrat was tapped by House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo to serve as chairman of the House Committee on Bills in the Third Reading, a powerful gatekeeper panel through which all legislation must pass prior to coming before the House floor for a final reading. The appointment and others made by DeLeo were ratified by a House caucus on Feb. 6. Speliotis last month began his ninth term after a previous stint of four terms. Prior to his new assignment, he had served for four years as House chairman of the Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure. Speliotis represents the 13th Essex district, which includes Danvers and parts of Middleton and Peabody. In a statement, Speliotis said he was pleased by his appointment to head the Committee on Bills in Third Reading. “The committee reviews every bill that goes before the House of Representatives,” he said. “I feel this new assignment will only strengthen my ability to assist the communities in my district and my constituents. I greatly appreciate that Speaker DeLeo nominated me and that the Democratic Caucus supported my appointment. I hope to meet everyone’s expectations both in my district and at the State House.”
