Department offers the police officer experience

The Police Department is inviting residents 18 and over to apply for a Civilian Police Academy it is offering this spring. The 10-week academy is designed to provide residents a clear picture of what it is like to be a Winthrop police officer. It will feature classes taught by Winthrop officers on subjects such as domestic violence, motor vehicle law, patrol procedures, accidents, firearms awareness, gangs, and juvenile and drug problems. Participants will also get to ride in a cruiser. Classes will be held Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9 p.m. starting April 3. To apply, go to the Police Department page on the town website, www.town.winthrop.ma.us, and click on Citizens Police Academy. Those selected will be notified by March 20. For more information, contact Sergeant Stephen Rogers at 617-846-1212, ext. 2940, or by e-mail at srogers@town.winthrop.ma.us.
