Grant allows financial transparency for locals

Five communities, including Woburn, were recently awarded a $120,000 state grant to make their municipal expenditures easily accessible and transparent for residents via their city or town web pages. The grant was among 27 totaling $2.25 million awarded through the state’s Community Innovation Challenge grant program, which supports innovative regionalization and other cost-saving initiatives. Brookline, Chelsea, Chicopee, and Revere joined Woburn in securing the grant to implement the financial transparency project, to be known as the Open Checkbook program. “This program will change the way citizens and municipalities understand each other,” Mayor Scott D. Galvin said in a prepared statement. “Transparency fosters a spirit of collaboration and accountability, which is vital to a successful government.”
