The Feb. 8-9 snowstorm cost nearly triple Malden’s total snow removal budget for the entire fiscal year, Mayor Gary Christenson said. The storm cleanup cost an estimated $500,000, as 82 pieces of snow-removal equipment worked Malden streets, Christenson said. The city had $200,000 budgeted for snow removal for July 1, 2012, through June 31, 2013. “To go from zero to 30 inches overnight, it’s difficult, despite the best of plans,” Christenson said. Unlike most budget items, Massachusetts municipalities are allowed to carry over deficits in snow removal to the following year.
