City honors belated WWII Purple Heart recipient

Mayor Carlo DeMaria Jr. recently extended the city’s appreciation to George Desiderio, an Everett resident who after decades of waiting was recently awarded a Purple Heart for injuries he sustained in World War II. A former veterans’ services director for the city, Desiderio belatedly received his Purple Heart when he discovered a document verifying that he had been injured while serving in the war, and his granddaughter presented that document in a letter to the Army. DeMaria gave Desiderio a city citation honoring him for his service and his receipt of the Purple Heart.
