Former selectman Al Merritt dies of cancer


Al Merritt, who resigned from the Board of Selectmen on Dec. 31, 2012, for health reasons, died of cancer on March 20. The two-term selectman was previously the chairman of the School Building Committee and the Economic Development and Housing Advisory Committee, and had served on the Finance Committee. On Jan. 28, selectmen voted to name the community space at the Market Street at Lynnfield development the Al Merritt Media and Cultural Center.
