Participation increases for AP classes

Methuen High School is reporting tremendous results following an ongoing three-year effort to increase participation in Advanced Placement courses. In 2009, the high school administered 59 AP tests to students; in 2012, that number rose to 543, with more than 40 percent of those earning a qualifying score. The new approach — an open enrollment format rather than teacher-driven individual selection — is part of a five-year expansion program funded by a $500,000 grant from the Mass Math + Science Initiative.
