The town plans to make its buildings more energy-efficient through the use of a recent $169,000 state grant. Winthrop became eligible for the money as a result of its designation by the state Department of Energy Resources last December as a Massachusetts Green Community. Cities and towns earn that designation by undertaking a series of steps to become more energy-efficient and to expand their use of renewable energy. The first round of energy efficiency projects will include the installation of new lighting and electrical fixtures and more efficient HVAC systems in several town buildings.
