Dracut committee seeks Prop. 2½ override

Dracut School Committee members are looking to residents to approve a Proposition 2½ override to fund a nearly 5 percent increase in the school budget for next year, warning that failure to do so may result in layoffs among the town’s elementary school teachers. Finance Committee members have voiced support for the override, but it is unclear if taxpayers are willing to go along. School Committee members Joe Wilkie and Dan O’Connell said they are hoping to find the same support from voters they received in 2011 when a tax hike was approved to fund a $60 million high school renovation. The exact amount of funding in the override will be announced this month, with the Town Meeting vote in June.
