City launches Clipper Trail website

The city has launched a Clipper Heritage Trail website, clipperheritagetrail.com, designed to help tourists, day-trippers, history buffs, and students discover Newburyport’s rich history. The website features a welcome video, 12 self-guided history tours that describe 125 historic points of interest, and some 200 historical images, downloadable maps, and brochures. The site also offers a historical timeline, local resources, and publications. The Clipper Heritage Trail website was inspired by the Clipper Trail signs that were seen throughout Newburyport in the early 1970s, directing tourists to historical points of interest. The original Clipper Trail sign that was designed in 1969 by the late Edward K. Piel, a model shipbuilder who served as head of the Chamber of Commerce’s tourist planning committee, is being revived to create a marketing tool for the trail: a granite paver with Piel’s original design of the Clipper Trail vessel. To make walking through the city’s history easier, a mobile application for the Clipper Heritage Trail is expected to be unveiled in May and granite pavers will be inlaid in the brick sidewalks in front of various downtown historical points of interest.
