Schools to get $480,000 textbook upgrade

The Melrose public schools will be getting $480,000 to buy new textbooks and other educational materials for grades kindergarten through 12. The materials are needed to align curriculum with state standards. The district expects to spend $220,000 to $240,000 on math texts for elementary and high school students starting this spring. Texts for other core curriculum areas, such as English language arts, science, history, and foreign language, will be purchased from July of this year to March 2014, School Superintendent Cyndy Taymore wrote in a letter to city financial officials. The Board of Aldermen on April 1 approved a bond authorization for the purchase.
