Residents can buy discounted rain barrels as a part of a communitywide conservation and sustainability program. Through a partnership between Burlington and Great American Rain Barrel Co., residents through May 31 can purchase barrels for $69, which 40 percent below the retail price of $119. “We are bringing rain barrels to Burlington to help homeowners bring down their water costs and help our community protect its water supply,” Jodie Wennemer, the town’s conservation assistant, said in a statement. “Rain barrels are a also a great way to reduce the burden on the municipal storm-water system and to help alleviate some of the flooding that we see around town.” The 60-gallon barrels are being offered in three colors: forest green, earth brown, and Nantucket gray. Each is manufactured from a recycled shipping drum and comes with overflow fittings, a drain plug, a screw-on cover, and a threaded spigot with a choice of two ports to use with either a watering can or a garden hose. For more information or to place an order, go to www.greatamericanrainbarrel.com, click on “Community Programs,” and select Burlington. People with questions can call the Conservation Department at 781-270-1655.
