Seafood Coalition rally on Monday

The Gloucester-based Northeast Seafood Coalition has scheduled a groundfish industry rally Monday at 11 a.m. at the Boston Fish Pier in South Boston. According to a news release, the organization hopes to “unite the industry and call upon the federal government for disaster assistance and mitigation needs” to keep businesses viable and preserve the industry. “The economic impacts of the annual catch limits being proposed for May 1 will be devastating,” said Jackie Odell, the organization’s executive director. “The proposed reductions will have life-altering impacts for all small businesses dependent on the groundfish fishery — from fishing entities and shore-side businesses to restaurants and grocery stores that depend on fresh, local seafood products. American seafood consumers will undoubtedly feel the effects too. Every day, we hear from our fishing entity and shore-side business membership that they don’t know if they’re going to survive these reductions.” For more information, go to www.northeastseafoodcoalition.org.
