Veterans group seeks donations

An area veterans organization is seeking donations for a parade it is holding in Lynn on Sept. 22. The Veterans Appreciation Day Parade will honor all military veterans, past and present. The event is being organized by the North Shore Veterans Appreciation Committee, a nonprofit that held a similar parade in Swampscott in 2010. Because of the success of that event, the committee decided to hold another parade, this time in Lynn, according to John Sacherski, chairman of the group’s board and the commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1240 in Swampscott. Close to 2,000 marchers are expected to take part in this year’s parade, which will feature about 19 marching bands and representatives from all branches of the military. Other units will include contingents from local police and fire departments, high school ROTC groups, and military reenactment groups representing conflicts dating back to the War of 1812. Sacherski said donations of any amount are welcome, as the group seeks to meet the estimated $50,000 cost of the parade. To donate or for more information, call Sacherski at 781-599-1240 or 781-593-0915.
