Chelmsford adopts clean energy initiative

Chelmsford is among 10 communities chosen by the Patrick administration to participate in the first round of the 2013 Solarize Massachusetts program, a grass-roots clean-energy marketing, education, and group-buying program. Run by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center and the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources, the program is designed to increase the adoption of solar energy and reduce the overall cost of solar power. The program offers residents and businesses discounted pricing for solar energy equipment. The more people in a municipality who participate, the greater the savings for everyone in that city or town. Participating in this first round for 2013 are Bourne, Brookline, Carlisle, Chelmsford, Lee, Medford, Medway, Newton, Northampton, and Williamstown. Carlisle and Chelmsford will participate in the program together. Last year, 17 cities and towns participated in Solarize Mass, with 749 residents and businesses signing contracts to install solar electricity systems with the capacity to generate 4.8 megawatts of clean, renewable energy, enough to power the equivalent of 719 Massachusetts homes annually.
