Programs boost tree planting in city

Two city programs are planting about 30 trees in Peabody this spring. Under the Peabody Tree Planting Program, the city plants trees in front of the homes of residents who request it. The residents are offered a selection of trees that fit specific guidelines. The tree warden visits the site to determine the viability of the requested planting area and then returns periodically after the planting to ensure the tree is in good health. The Adopt-A-Tree Program allows residents to purchase a tree from a list and then have the tree planted on their property by the Department of Parks, Recreation & Forestry. The city runs the program in conjunction with Northeast Nursery Garden Center in Peabody. Both programs operate on a spring and fall planting schedule, with tree requests or purchases made early in each season. Although the spring plantings are already underway, residents can make their requests or purchases for fall plantings beginning in August. For more information on the Adopt-A-Tree program, go to www.northeastnursery.com/plants/adoptatree.html. For more information on the Peabody Tree Planting Program, contact Brian Grant, tree warden, at 978-536-7134 or by e-mail at brian.grant@peabody-ma.gov.
