Medi-Weightloss has donated $250 to the Billerica Scholarship Foundation in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, which was celebrated May 6 to 11. Since opening in January 2008, Medi-Weightloss in Billerica put a penny for every pound its patients have lost into an empty water cooler jug. Earlier this month, the weight-loss clinic reached a milestone of 25,000 pounds lost. The company decided to donate the money to an education-related cause. “Education and weight loss go hand-in-hand,” Elizabeth Camacho, office manager for Medi-Weightloss in Billerica, said in a written statement. “In order to lose weight and keep it off, you have to change your lifestyle. Teaching our patients how to live a healthy lifestyle is the most important part of our program. Medi-Weightloss is so successful because the foundation of our program is education; that’s why we chose to donate these symbolic pennies to the Billerica Scholarship Fund.” The Billerica Scholarship Foundation, established in 1988, raises funds to provide scholarships for students who live in Billerica. “We couldn’t think of a better way to thank our teachers than donating the money to help fund their students’ continued education,” said Camacho.
