Voters approve budget, temporary moratorium

Voters approved a $76.1 million fiscal 2014 budget and a temporary moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries in town, at their annual Town Meeting. In some of its other business, the meeting appropriated $603,000 in additional funding for the ongoing project to improve athletic fields and facilities at the high school and $1.6 million for capital improvements. In other town news, Beebe Library is offering two free programs this week. On Tuesday, Jeff Klapes, a reference librarian at Beebe, will give a pictorial talk on The Plain of Jars, an archeological site in Laos that contains 2,500-year-old stone jars. On Wednesday, a panel of mystery writers — Coralie Jensen, Susan Oleksiw, and Clea Simon — will discuss modern female protagonists and how women authors are redefining the mystery genre. Both events are at 7 p.m. Seats can be reserved online at wakefieldlibrary.org or by calling 781-246-6334.
