The Stevens Memorial Library is offering residents an opportunity to learn more about what it takes to raise backyard poultry. Dave Valentine of Valentine & Sons Seed Company & Heritage Poultry in Mont Vernon, N.H., is scheduled to give a free presentation at 7 p.m. Thursday at the library, 345 Main St., on raising backyard poultry. Started in 2007, Valentine & Sons blends the family’s love of gardening and history by preserving traditional plants and foods. The farm offers heirloom plants and seeds, a line of farm-to-pantry products, and heritage poultry. Valentine & Sons began its heritage livestock program in 2009. Valentine provides consultation services and how-to seminars for museums and backyard poultry owners throughout New England. At a recent Town Meeting, there was spirited debate over a citizens’ petition to allow residents to keep hens. Voters ultimately passed the petition. For more information about Valentine and his family farm, visit www.vnsseed.com. To learn more about his upcoming visit, contact the library’s reference desk at 978-688-9505, ext. 42016. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Stevens Memorial Library.
