Proposal in Senate could bring jobs to city

New Balance in Lawrence could benefit from a proposal now before Congress . The proposal, which has passed the House of Representatives and now awaits debate before the Senate, would require that the cash allowance provided new military recruits to purchase athletic shoes for basic training be spent on shoes that are US-made through every part of the supply chain. There has been a rule in place requiring that uniforms meet the same requirement since 1941. Only two footwear manufacturers in the country comply with those parameters, one of which is New Balance, whose largest facility is in Lawrence. A spokesman for the company estimates the bill’s passage could create up to 200 jobs.
