City resident named Walk Hero

Joyce Becker of Haverhill has been named a Walk Hero for the 25th anniversary of the Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk. Scheduled for Sept. 8, the one-day fund-raising event aims to raise $7 million this year. Since its inception in 1989, the walk has raised $87 million to support adult and pediatric patient care and cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund. As a Walk Hero, Becker, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in June 2009 and is being treated at Dana-Farber’s Jimmy Fund clinic, will inspire an expected 8,500 participants who will walk up to 26.2 miles along the historic Boston Marathon route. The Walk Hero program matches Dana-Farber patients with walk teams, providing an opportunity for walkers to connect with patients who are being treated for cancer. Becker has been paired with Team Project Cupid. To learn more about the Jimmy Fund Walk or to support a walker or volunteer, visit or call 866-531-9255.
