The town this past week began a project to reconstruct a portion of East Street. The estimated $900,000 project is being undertaken along a 2,500-foot stretch extending from the railroad tracks adjacent to Market Basket to just before the Katie Estates condominium on Jill’s Way. In addition to the road reconstruction, it includes replacing and repairing drainage lines and upgrading the intersections at Carter Street and Industrial Avenue, according to Brian Gilbert, the town’s superintendent of public works. The drainage work was set to get underway last Wednesday and take about three weeks to complete. The road work will begin in early September and take about four weeks, Gilbert said. The street will remain open throughout the project, but motorists should expect delays. Newport Construction is undertaking the project, which is being funded with money the town received from the state’s Chapter 90 road improvement program.
