Annual street festival returns

The Stoneham Chamber of Commerce Town Day Committee has announced the return of Kids Korner to Town Day, Stoneham’s annual street festival. This year the celebration is slated to take place Sept. 7 (rain date Sept. 8) on the Town Common. Beginning at noon, old favorites like the Diaper Derby, the Toddler Trot, and bubble gum blowing contests will offer fun and prizes. The ice cream eating contest also will make a comeback. Megan McDonough, a Town Day committee member and participant for many years, is organizing Kids Korner for this year’s festival, continuing a tradition started by Alan K. Melkonian, who died in June after a long battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease. A joint venture between the town government and the Stoneham Chamber of Commerce, Town Day features local businesses, town and school groups, and the nonprofit organizations that service Stoneham.
