Renovated stadium, field to open

The unveiling of the renovated, $3.5 million New Balance Track and Field at Newell Stadium is planned for Friday. A community celebration and opening ceremony begins at 5 p.m. with stadium gates opening and a parade of past, present, and future athletes scheduled at 5:30 p.m. There will be remarks and a ribbon-cutting, and the evening’s main event will be the home-opening football game vs. Lynn Classical at 7:30 p.m. The Gloucester Fishermen Athletic Association spearheaded the renovation of the 2,250-seat multiuse stadium. New Balance donated $500,000 to the project and received naming rights for 10 years. According to a news release, the football team played all of its games at other sites because of the condition of the old field, and the high school has not hosted a track meet in nearly a decade because of the track conditions.
