Communities pursuing safety system

The city and three neighboring communities will jointly study the possible creation of a regional public safety communications system through a $159,400 grant recently awarded by the state 911 Department. With the grant money, Woburn, along with Burlington, Stoneham, and Winchester, will hire a consultant to detail for them the steps needed to create a regional center for their police and fire departments, as well as the cost and benefits to each community and the obstacles involved. Part of the money will also go toward hiring a project manager to assist with the study. The funds were awarded under a state program that supports planning and implementation of regional emergency communications centers.
