Ray retires as police chief

Mark Ray, who had served as Beverly’s police chief since 2007, retired last week. The city has started the search for a new chief and Captain Christopher Negrotti will be acting chief until a new department head is chosen. Ray, a graduate of Beverly High School, worked as a Beverly police officer for 28 years. Over the years, he served as a detective, DARE officer, senior firearms officer, training coordinator, sergeant, public information officer, patrol commander, grant writer, and financial officer. Ray also spent 11 months in Iraq as a National Guard lieutenant colonel. Earlier this year, Ray applied for the police chief’s post in Lone Tree, Colo., but he was not selected.
