Town’s cash account in ‘good shape’

The town’s free cash account is in good shape, town administrator Tracy Blais told selectmen recently. Newbury has $848,263 in certified free cash, she said, derived from roughly $135,000 in unanticipated revenues, (mostly from excise taxes), as well as decreased expenses due to changes at the transfer station, unfilled positions, and unspent employment costs and appropriation balances. Also, $400,000 was carried over from last fiscal year. In the past, Blais said, free cash has been used to purchase police cruisers, dump trucks, and firefighting gear, to fund building repairs, and to fill deficits in the snow and ice budget.
