The town’s free cash account is in good shape, town administrator Tracy Blais told selectmen recently. Newbury has $848,263 in certified free cash, she said, derived from roughly $135,000 in unanticipated revenues, (mostly from excise taxes), as well as decreased expenses due to changes at the transfer station, unfilled positions, and unspent employment costs and appropriation balances. Also, $400,000 was carried over from last fiscal year.
