Screening Room meets fund-raiser goal

The Screening Room, a fixture in downtown Newburyport since 1982, has exceeded its goal of raising $60,000 in private donations, money the theater needs to purchase new digital equipment. Organizers said the online fund-raising campaign, which ends Monday, has exceeded its original goal. At first, the existing sound system was to have been incorporated as a means to save money, but a new system employing state-of-the-art components is a dream now within reach. In addition, the purchase of a new screen may also be possible thanks to the generosity of donors. To ensure those components are installed, the Screening Room, at 82 State St., will continue to accept donations through Monday. To celebrate the success of its capital campaign, the Screening Room hosted a free concert last Saturday at the Belleville Congregational Church community center on High Street. The concert featured some of Newburyport’s best musical performers, including Liz Frame and the Kickers, fiddle master EJ Ouellette and his band Crazy Maggy, Kate Redgate, and High Rock Mountain.
