The Special Olympics Massachusetts Fall Soccer Tournament is scheduled for Sunday at Governor’s Academy, Elm Street, in the Byfield village section of Newbury. According to a release, more than 350 academy students will join students from Landmark School in Beverly and Triton Regional High School in Byfield, along with faculty, staff, and local residents as volunteers for the event. “It’s a testament to the level of community service and volunteerism fostered from staff to student at the school and it has sustained a truly lasting partnership with Special Olympics,” Special Olympics president and chief executive MaryBeth McMahon said in a prepared statement. This is the 26th year that the school is hosting the event, and the second year that it coincides with the academy’s Alumni Day, where alumni have an opportunity for service activities across the country. Nearly 1,000 participants from 85 teams around the state will participate in the tournament, which will feature an opening ceremony at 8:30 a.m. and competition from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
