Plans approved for YMCA expansion

The Andover Planning Board on Jan. 14 approved plans for expansion of the Merrimack Valley YMCA’s Andover building. The approval marks a significant milestone for the $21 million Andover/North Andover YMCA project, which will double the size of the current facility. The Y is raising money for the expansion through its capital campaign. The project also has received tax-exempt financing provided by Eastern Bank. Once completed, the Y, which currently has 8,000 members, will include an expanded aquatics facility, a new child-care development center, a bigger wellness center, and a rehabilitation center operated by Lawrence General Hospital. With headquarters in Lawrence, the Merrimack Valley YMCA includes the Andover/North Andover YMCA, the Lawrence YMCA, the Methuen YMCA, Camp Lawrence, Camp Nokomis on Lake Winnipesaukee, and Day Camp Otter in Salem, N.H.
