Gymnasium to be named for Richard Lynch

The gymnasium/field house at Swampscott High School will be named for Richard Lynch, 87, a Swampscott resident and former teacher and coach, at a ceremony scheduled for Feb. 5. Lynch, who also served as athletic director at Danvers High School, compiled a 119-37 record during eight years as Swampscott’s varsity basketball coach, including a 59-game home winning streak. He is a member of the Lynn English, Swampscott, and Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame, as well as being honored as a Boston University Alumni Coach of the Year. The Swampscott High School Athletic Hall of Fame proposed the idea to the School Committee, which unanimously approved it according to Hall of Fame Committee member Jack Taymore. The committee will host both the dedication ceremony and a reception to follow, and all former players, students, and friends are invited to attend.
