Mahoney’s to hold annual tropical event

Want to fend off the winter blues? Escape into a world of warm, lush color at Mahoney’s fourth annual tropical event, “Orchids: Your Winter Escape.” From Saturday through Feb. 16, Mahoney’s in Winchester will fill its greenhouses with colorful and unusual selections of exotic orchids and house plants, creating a lush, tropical rainforest. “It’s amazing to see how much the greenhouse transforms for this event,” Natalie Decker, marketing manager for Mahoney’s Garden Centers, said in a prepared statement. “You actually feel as though you’ve stepped out of cold New England and into the warmth of a tropical rainforest. It’s a great way to escape the wintry weather, experience beautiful displays of exotic color and bask in the glorious smell of a rainforest.” The event kicks off with a reception from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Mahoney’s, 242 Cambridge St. Throughout the week, Mahoney’s will have experts demonstrate how easy it is to care for orchids, air plants, and other tropical plants. Free seminars also will be offered and guests are welcome to visit Mahoney’s Design Bar anytime during the event to create a terrarium, garden display, or funky air-plant garden. The event ends with a Kids Day on Feb. 16. Children can participate in a variety of hands-on workshops, and will take home a free mini-succulent. For more information, visit or call 781-729-5900.
