The city will be developing a Housing Production Plan with the help of two recent grants. One is a $15,000 technical grant from MassHousing, and the other a $5,000 grant from the Metropolitan Area Planning Council. The plan will outline a strategy for Everett to meet the requirement set under the state law Chapter 40B of having at least 10 percent of its housing stock affordable. Cities and towns below the 10 percent threshold that have a state-approved plan and meet their housing production goals gain the power to control Chapter 40B development in the same way communities that meet the 10 percent requirement can. The creation of the plan will be a yearlong process that will include public forums. The project is expected to get underway this spring, according to James Errickson, the city’s director of planning and development.
