Lobster Reuben

Brodie’s Seaport, 215 Derby St., Salem

One day, chef Mike Pistorio’s father asked him if he had ever considered tossing cole slaw on a fish sandwich. Pistorio accepted the challenge, and the Lobster Reuben was born. The $21 sandwich is packed with lobster tossed in house-made thousand-island dressing, slathered in slaw, and griddled with Swiss cheese on sourdough bread. “I can’t overstate the importance of quality lobster,” Pistorio said. www.brodiesseaport.com

Seafood Quesadilla

The Lobster Pool, 329 Granite St, Rockport

The usual fish choices are available here, but for New Englanders who have been around the seafood block, there is a more interesting option: the seafood quesadilla. Un-fried, unorthodox, and unpretentious, the $14 quesadilla is filled with lobster, shrimp, scallops, a three-cheese blend, roasted red peppers, and seasonings, baked in the oven. The recipe is about 10 years old, said owner Myalisa Waring, but the seafood is fresh, from Captain Joe & Sons in Gloucester. www.lobsterpoolrestaurant.com

The menu changes with the seasons, and for owner David Punch, now is the season for fresh fish. The ever-changing “boards” — amalgamations of foods du jour — can include such items as roasted local flounder, grilled Spanish octopus, littleneck clams from Wellfleet, and local tuna. The boards go for about $68 and can feed two to three. www.sycamorenewton.com

Cajun Shrimp Po’Boy

Dairy Joy, 331 North Ave, Weston

This summer, the folks at Dairy Joy decided to experiment by throwing together Cajun seasoning and breaded baby shrimp. Thus, the Cajun Shrimp Po’Boy was born. Three weeks after the debut of the $10 sandwich, it is extremely popular and “nice and spicy,” said chef Trey Benitez. www.dairyjoy.net

Smoked Seafood Chowder

Mattapoisett Chowder House,

79 Fairhaven Road, Mattapoisett

For a bolder alternative to traditional clam chowder, this chowder joint offers a smoked seafood chowder, with smoked bluefish, haddock, and shrimp in a cream base. $3.75 for a cut; $4.75 for a bowl; $12.75 for a quart. www.mchrestaurant.com

Stuffed Quahogs

Quahog Republic, 197 Onset Ave., Wareham

The folks at Quahog Republic are a little clam-obsessed, and it shows; their $6 “stuffie” is made with loads of quahog meat, seasoning, and a bit of linguica (Portuguese sausage). It is baked in the shell the meat came from, and served up crispy and hot. www.quahogrepublic.com
