The Merrimac Fire Department recently purchased an automated CPR device using $15,000 raised by members of the department that included donations from some local businesses. Salter Transportation Inc., Rick and Eric Fournier of 1st Payroll, and Haverhill Bank made donations, part of a fund-raising effort led by the department’s Will Howard, Shane Sevigny, Nicole Richard, Kris Smith, Brandon Cox and Jay Fournier. The device, a LUCAS 3 Chest Compression System, performs more consistent and accurate chest compressions than humans, who often tire. “During my 30 years in the fire service,’’ said Deputy Chief Greg Habgood in a release, “I have always been impressed by the ability of members of the fire service to see a need and get things done to meet that need.”
