Through Dec. 15, the HeatSmart/CoolSmart program will provide discounts of up to 15 percent on the installation of clean energy air source heat pumps to residents and businesses, which officials say can both heat and cool homes at lower costs than conventional systems. The technology uses differences in outdoor air temperatures to move heat into a home during winter and to remove it during the summer. With help from community volunteers, the city is conducting a variety of outreach efforts for the program, including a kick-off event at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 22 at the Argenziano School, 290 Washington St. Heat pump units can be financed through Mass Save’s zero percent interest Heat Loan program. Based on income, residents also may be eligible to purchase their pumps via the Somerville Housing rehab forgivable loan program.
