Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone says Somerville is joining 27 other communities across the country that have developed Vision Zero Action Plans in an attempt to cut down on traffic fatalities and serious injuries on their roadways. Set to be completed in 2018, the Somerville plan will be developed through data-driven technology and community input. The plan will include one-, three-, and five-year goals for engineering, education, and enforcement aimed at enhancing road safety for motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians, and public transit users. “In 2016 alone, Somerville saw 636 reported crashes on city-owned roadways, and 224 of those resulted in some type of injury,” Curtatone said in a prepared statement. “This is unacceptable; traffic deaths and serious injuries are preventable.”John Laidler can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org.
