Crosswalk changes aim to reduce traffic in Salem

Salem is adjusting the pedestrian crossings at up to eight intersections to reduce traffic congestion and improve crossing times for those on foot. Currently, the intersections operate under a pedestrian phase in which traffic is stopped at all approaches to allow pedestrians to cross any part of the intersection. The change involves moving to a concurrent phase in which pedestrians cross in the same direction and at the same time as parallel motor vehicle traffic. The changes will be coordinated with signal upgrades already underway at many of the same intersections.
