Traffic changes in Salem aim to decrease congestion

Salem has enacted a change in patterns aimed at improving traffic flow and pedestrian safety at the busy intersection of Brown Street and Washington Square West near the Salem Common. Eastbound traffic on Brown Street approaching Salem Common is required to stay to the right of the Roger Conant statue, while traffic turning westbound from Washington Square onto Brown Street must stay to the right of the statue on that side, according to Matt Smith, the city’s director of traffic and parking. “The changes simplify the intersection so there are fewer lanes merging, and allows for more space for pedestrians to cross or pause near the statue as traffic passes,” Smith said. The statue is near one of the city’s top attractions, the Salem Witch Museum.
