Somerville residents are invited to join in celebration of the city’s 175h birthday at a soireé from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11, in Tufts University’s Aidekman Arts Center, 40 Talbot Ave., Medford. The evening is the finale of a series of events the city has been holding this year to mark the 175th anniversary of its official separation from Charlestown in March 1842. Open to anyone 18 or older, the evening will feature live music by local and Tufts University artists, food from local restaurants, and a cash bar, in addition to samples of a special edition 175th birthday beer by Aeronaut Brewing Company. Attendees also will have access to the Aidekman Art Gallery and its current exhibit, “Chinese Myth, Folklore, & History,” featuring a 74-foot mural by Yuan Yunsheng. The event is black tie optional and business casual minimum, but in the spirit of the occasion, attendees are welcome to come dressed in Colonial-era attire, as members of the Somerville’s Historic Preservation Commission and Somerville High School’s Local History Club plan to do. A limited number of tickets ($20) and available at somervillema.gov/Somerville175.
