Roy Belson, Medford’s superintendent of 23 years, announced Monday that he would retire when his current contract ends on June 30.
Belson, 70, is known for his near-constant availability and dedication to the schools. A Medford native, Belson played basketball for the Mustangs when he attended the school in the 1960s.
“It is simply the right period for me to spend more time with my family and to pursue special causes and interests that have not been possible given the schedule and work responsibility of an active School Superintendent,” Belson wrote in his resignation letter to the School Committee.
Plans to find a new superintendent will be discussed at the next School Committee meeting on Monday, Nov. 27.Laura Elyse King can be reached at email@example.com. Follow her on Twitter @lauraelyseking.
