Essex Tech considers name change

What's in a name? The Essex Technical High School in Middleton was called the Essex North Shore Agricultural and Technical High School when the North Shore Technical High School, the Essex Agricultural and Technical Institute, and the vocational programs at Peabody High School merged. The School Committee, which includes representatives from the distric’s 17 sending cities and towns, shortened the name to Essex Technical High in 2012. Recently, three members of the current School Committee advocated for returning the word “agriculture” to the school’s identity, so a subcommittee has been established to look into a new name that reflects the school’s heritage. In addition, the subcommittee will look at overall ramifications of a name change, including cost.
